I had a good size job today. Cleaning tile, carpet, etc. I always do a demo when I clean tile and on this particular demo I am so glad I did. The grout was just falling apart and disintegrating before my eyes. I took a white cloth wet it with water and rubbed a different area and the grout just came off again.

I passsed on the tile and did the rest off the stuff. I was planning my Hawaii trp with this job Evil or Very Mad But If would taken my spinner andbrush to this grout I would have owned that shitting install. Lesson for the day test test test.

Don't know. It was one floor all one level. What if it was?

Hard surface flooring installs are much more likely to have issues with cracked tiles, and cracked and missing grout than an install on a solid concrete sub-floor.

Because if they're not installed properly over solid foundation, then it allows for a bit of "give", which causes the problems with the hard/solid surface flooring over a "flexible" sub-floor.

I see it all the time around here, tile installed right on top of a wood sub-floor, without hardibacker board, concrete backer board or being "floated" prior to tiles being installed.

I was thinking more along the lines of improperly mixed grout. The install was only 9 months old

They should have used some creme of tarter in that grout Very Happy

Either that or it is like Davey pointed out...flexible base, it is very common around here as well. In this region, they pour a lot of floor leveler or even use sand to fill in sagging floors. Over time, they all fail and that tile starts to flex with every foot step.

You did dodge a bullet, Mo...those are nightmares. Twisted Evil

Dunno,

But I do know it doesn't take long, even less than 9 months for a solid floor to crack apart on a flexible base.........with every step, as Milspec said.

You might be right but wouldn't you see cracking, splitting, loose grout? The grout looked great until I added water to it.

Depends on how much foot traffic it received, but it could have been a flawed product from the start.
