White carpet and pets
I cleaned a two story apartment last week that was one of the worst. White carpet and two dogs. Installed seven years ago and never cleaned. I scraped up hand fulls of hair off the stairs prior to vacuuming, pre-sprayed with a 35% H2O2 boosted pre-conditioner and extracted with a portable. The owner was amazed and so was I. LOL He's decided to have it cleaned once a year. GREAT! Now I get to do it again and again. Since I work alone and didn't want to haul the portable up and down the stairs, I parked it at the bottom and added extra hoses.

Re: White carpet and pets
Matt, I used to clean a retirement home and those "traffic" patterns between the bed and the bathroom were the worst, but somebody has to help them.
I had a special wand that I used just for those jobs....glad that I no longer have that contract.

Re: White carpet and pets
Someone does have to help them...Rob, I typed a whole reply mentioning that but it sounded like a rude reply so I deleted...but really, if we dont who will? I do it and dont have a weak stomach for it.

Re: White carpet and pets
I had a lady recently call me and said I got up at 7 and had to wait til 9 to call you to say how excited I was from the cleaning you did...human urine from a disabled woman who needed my help. I did a top notch job to get the urine out so she can enjoy her home for the holidays. She cant sleep with her prosthetic legs on ...so, when it hits imagine trying to put legs on to go....she attempts but falls short sometimes.

You're a good man Devon07,
I have two assisted living (care homes) I do twice a year. No carpet. Drapes and upholstery. Pays good but hard to be around those poor older folks knowing this is their last stop.

Interesting information
I never thought that carpet cleaners could be harmful to pets if instructions on the label are not followed strictly. This study is by ASPCA. Check that article https://www.the-vacmaster.ca/blog/carpet-cleaning/can-carpet-cleaners-poison-pets/

I agree with the last part about keeping the pets out of the room while cleaning, but everything else they can toss in the trash. That article is selling an agenda and is not consistent with any chemistry that I know of. Sure, those chemicals are a hazard, but the concentration of it that may get left behind is so small that it will not be a risk to anything. There are worse compounds in their food than would be left in the carpet.
It is just a sales pitch.
Re: White carpet and pets
you can certainly poison animals.. that is why I will never ever use a strong alkaline detergent running solution to extract with.
A lot of these truckmount extraction detergents are not safe products at all! and cleaners use them to make the job go faster
they are fine in commercial settings but never in someones home... plus its really bad for you if your cleaning stairs and eating all that steam right in the face.
just look at the label, some have ether

Re: White carpet and pets
Oh, I have to give you that point AC. I didn't think about those extraction agents as I haven't used them in 15 years. I don't see any risk with presprays (water downed in the bottle, sprayed at 8:1, flushed out after) but an extraction agent could be a problem.
Along those same lines, stain guards could also be a health problem. Pretty much any thing being intentionally left behind could be a problem.

Re: White carpet and pets
teflon is okay, I used to think otherwise until I researched it more. Teflon is potentially cancer causing yes.
but the risk is when you have teflon coated pans that are flaking from consumers using metal stirring utensils, it scratches and flakes away the teflon which then gets into your food.
Teflon protectors sprayed on carpet once dried are completely inert.
Pre spray not such a worry, by the time anything would be left behind in a carpet its heavily diluted like u said.
Only worry is pre spraying with TM heat on using hydroforce and steaming it up in the room, that will for sure poison you.

Re: White carpet and pets
The mindset of a lot of cleaners is.. "if it was unsafe they would never let me buy it or sell it to people"
this is so untrue, these chemicals are not sold to the public and are marked as "for professional use only"
The manufacturers of them are not as concerned with health issues as we are, they arent using them everyday. You should see what golf course lawn care guys are exposed to.. its really bad.

Re: White carpet and pets
Just look at all of us old cleaners and see if the chemicals have any effect? I feel the effects every time I wake.
Re: White carpet and pets
That's why I only use 2 scoops ( 4 oz ) of detergents maximum in a 5 gallon jugs, and use it as needed, only in trashed carpets.
I'm still guilty of using prochem power burst, and ultrapac once in a while on trashed carpets, I tried other chemicals and just keep going back to those as I feel those cleans best, actually grease eraser is good too, but the ph is even higher than power burst and ultrapac. Oh well, I almost retire anyway

Re: White carpet and pets
Nope, not yet anyway, just trying to work less while making the same amount of money, lol.
I'm trying to focus on marketing portion of the business, not necessarily spending more, but more on spending extra time talking to new customers and do a little more in home estimate, just did one earlier today and seal the deal for $ 700+ for 1500 sq ft and 2 flights of stairs.
I think I'm leaving too much money on the table by not spending a few extra minutes on the phone or spending extra time on estimates on bigger size jobs.
My part timer has been aggressively asking for more hours, that motivates me to do these things.

Re: White carpet and pets
I do think that money is left behind when people don't chat it up with the customer. Many focus on selling extra services to increase the ticket, but forget to be social and shoot for a tip.
I cleaned a small house this morning that barely reached the truck minimum ($100). Instead of adding labor by pitching tile or maybe cleaning the furniture, I ended up with a full $100 tip!!!
How? I noticed she had an old Martin guitar on the wall and a photo of a young girl playing on stage in an old black and white picture. I mentioned it and we started talking about guitars and 15 minutes later, she showed me an album of her touring days with a folk group out of Missouri in the 50's.
I didn't have to break out the tile spinner nor wreck my back with the sofa to double by ticket. I actually didn't realize the amount until I started driving home....nice gal.

Re: White carpet and pets
Working less and making more and focusing on the marketing is the ticket to a long and successful business. If you strive to do that the business will become passive income and Ill you'll do is collect the check.
You know Rob from the very beginning I have always thought the most interesting part of this business. Maybe its because I liven in a retirement and they have interesting stories

It's my favorite part as well....I've met a Titanic Surviver, multiple musicians, a family of trapeze artists, and one porn star....in the last year alone.
You don't find that in a cubicle.
