Calling Mr. Wonderful
So I had a PM that Ive done work for, for 23 years; that replaced my almost 2 years ago with a new guy. (short story)- PMs bookkeeper has a boyfriend that started a carpet cleaning biz...(you know where im going with this?)
-so i get a call the other day and they have 2 townhouses needing done. I say, 'you bet'; instead of 'you got the right Matt? yes, the other guys name is Matt also.
So I show up yesterday and, 'crap'; those townhouses. The carpets should have been replaced 5 years ago but the owner is a cheep________(fill in the blank). crappy carpet all around. worn out like you wouldnt believe. The 2nd unit, they took 2 truck loads to the dump. Theyd been cleaning for 2 days, now painting. The traffic patterns were just 'black'. The stairs...uugggh! So I mssg'd the 2 jobs after that and told them id be late.
mixed up some special sauce, pulled out the 360i and went to town. The worst bedroom went from black to white; but apparently they had a pet cuz the odor whacked me as i cleaned. (they had a ozone machine going). I went down and mixed up some 'matrix miricle' and hosed the place down. AND RV's the heck out of it. Major impovement.
-I wanted to txt the PM and thank him for calling me for the crappy stuff. but i didnt.
AND, I acually was almost to the other appt at the original time. To balance things out, those 2 jobs were real easy $ makers.

Oh, the MR. wonderful thing.....
on the tv show 'shark tank' , one of the investors calls himself Mr. wonderful.
I have another PM that calls me that sometimes, other times he just calls me super matt.

Re: Calling Mr. Wonderful
So they only call you when the job is too much for the “other Matt” to handle huh ? That calls for more moolah in my book
That had happened to me and eventually they stopped calling altogether and I don’t regret it, too much work for too little $$ even though I charge more, just not worth it.
Although if I’m being called Mr. Wonderful, I might just stick with the old price, lol.

Re: Calling Mr. Wonderful
so this PM use to be good for 20-40 rentals in july/Aug.
Even after he 'dropped me', he'll have me do 5-6. Maybe the other guy is out of town. I figure if I hang on the other guy will close(in biz 2.5 years) and Im back in; after he figures he's not making enough.
-back in 2000-2005; this PM was good for upto $7k/year. Mostly 'not very dirty carpets'.

Re: Calling Mr. Wonderful
I agree with DP. I'd up the invoice if all you get are the rat nasties.

Re: Calling Mr. Wonderful
I guess I am with Dp and Freemind on this one, don't give that PM a safety net without charging more. Right now he is getting the best of all worlds, cheap cleaning and the ability to call in the master when things get tough. Put it back on the PM and let them live / die with their current cleaner and only step in when the price is right. That way they will see their mistake a little clearer.
Re: Calling Mr. Wonderful
He will be charged extra.
+the invoice will include notes:
-heavy odor and soiling
-heavy wear, suggest replacement
-salvage clean, no guarantees

Re: Calling Mr. Wonderful
I was thinking that I was the only one who left notations on the invoice like that? I normally include about 5 bullets of information regarding the job and sometimes I have had complaints about that on commercial jobs where they have to submit it to their boss for payment approval. I guess truth can hurt at times.
Re: Calling Mr. Wonderful
I used to leave notes like that all the time, but now I hardly do, only for new customers that’s thrown red flags all over the place, and fortunately I weed most of them out from the 1st phone call.
