Inexpencive Rug Drying Rack: Video
I really suck at these videos. ....I can't concentrate on talking or thinking with the damn camera always
watching/listening to me. :
But I did the best I could, so bare with me, and try not to fall asleep. ...........maybe one day I'll overcome my camera fright.

Nice content on the video Davey. I couldn't hear you when you walked away from the camera but besides that it was pretty cool video.
What the largest rug you can hang on that rack?

Re: Inexpencive Rug Drying Rack: Video
Thanks.
I've had 9x12's on it a few times before, which usually is about as big as I see rugs.
You could scale it to your needs if you needed bigger.
I've had it loaded a couple times, and it's very stable....Back when I had the idea and made it I was worried it fall over easily, but that's not the case.......the weight of the rug/s really keeps it well planted.

Re: Inexpencive Rug Drying Rack: Video
At first I thought I was narrating that video...our voices sound oddly similar...kind of creepy.
I like the design, simple and effective. Have you considered using scaffolding? I had a indoor pull up bar built using custom pieces of aluminum scaffolding so that I could break it down into 5 pieces and move it as needed. Should be able to create something like that for a drying rack, if you wanted something really light and portable.
Just another thought...I have to go and practice a new accent now.

Great DIY video Dave. I just might make one if those. I'll get ya in the January video contest thread. Thanks for sharing.

Damn, I'm sorry, Robert! I thought I was the only one unlucky enough to have such a monotone, sleep inducing voice.
Only compounded by my health probs a couple years ago, and then my shyness/camera fright sure doesn't help when doing something like this either.
I thought about using some scaffolding I have behind the garage, but when I came up with this 4x4 idea a couple years ago decided against using scaffolding for reasons I now don't remember.
What I show in the video works perfect for me. Easy to setup and break down, very sturdy and will hold many rugs especially with the 3rd 4x4 I have, easy to hang rugs by myself, and takes up virtually no room when I lay it down up against fence. Really the only draw back is it's not usable when it's raining, but that's really not much of a prob here..............If I didn't have so much crap in my garage I could use it in there.

It is a slick design, if it works for you, don't change a thing.
As for the voice...my ex used to call it "sandman tone"

Haha, yea my Ex would get all worked up and raise her voice and I would do what I do, talk in slo-mo calmly in response and it would just make here more angry because no matter what I always seemed so calm.

Re: Inexpencive Rug Drying Rack: Video
Davey, very good idea for a good percentage of rugs that come in! We have never used a rack like that, but could be a useful tool when you have many rugs in at one time. The only time you would never want to use that drying rack is when you have a red oriental that has 'bleeding' issues (or really any color that might bleed)...because all the water is dripping downward as it dries, pulling any bleeding dye colors with it, which will drip right into the white/off white fringe which will in turn, ruin the fringe...just a thought to pass on to others :-)
Re: Inexpencive Rug Drying Rack: Video
I think if your dealing with rugs that bleed you will look to dry them laying down or have other means if drying than the rake. I believe that Dave mAde this for the most common rugs, not the sensitive TLC rugs. I'm sure he handles them differently.
How about Dave hiw do you handle those rugs when drying.

Pretty EZ really, with most/almost all Hand Made Rugs that are the ones that tend to be the bleeders I just VLM/Encap clean them, and you don't have to worry about bleeding or getting them dry for that matter!!

I say FuCXK Um!!
if done correctly and thoroughly, it works great, and the rugs look great.
Matter of fact I've cleaned many hand made bleeders that way along side non hand made bleeders from same customer, using traditional/old 'wet' cleaning methods, and never had a customer not be totally happy with the rugs cleaned using the different methods, even when they are rolled out side by side for presentation/inspection upon delivery!

Re: Inexpencive Rug Drying Rack: Video
Turn a rug over put wet a pad down go over it with an OP machine with the exception of maybe Rug badger you cant get a better rug duster. Something about the vibration of an OP machine that just breaks up the embedded dry soils.
I recall dusting a sandwich bag full of beach sand out of a rug. I showed it to the customer and asked them if they ever lived by the beach. Sure enough they had just moved from beach house on Nothern Cal.
